The previously announced animated series based on the Magic: The Gathering tabletop and collectible card game is currently in production. A teaser visual (visible above) was released during Netflix’s Geeked Week 2024.
The series will be created in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast, with Patrick Osborne (Feast, Nimona) as supervising director and executive producer. Terry Matalas (Star Trek: Picard, 12 Monkeys) will serve as its showrunner and executive producer, noting a new creative direction for the project.
It has been an absolute dream collaboration with NETFLIX, HASBRO ENTERTAINMENT, WIZARDS OF THE COAST, and the brilliant Patrick Osborne to bring the many worlds of MAGIC: THE GATHERING to streaming. Those new to this sprawling saga will learn what millions of fans who play every day already know. MAGIC is the ultimate storytelling sandbox, brimming with iconic, complex characters, extraordinary mind-bending powers, and portals to every genre imaginable. It is also a powerful reminder that no matter what culture, country, or plane of existence you come from, we can all unite and become heroes together.

While it hasn’t been announced whether the Magic: The Gathering animated series will be done by a Japanese animation studio, it is worth noting that this is not the first time the franchise received an animated project.
For its Wilds of Eldraine expansion back in September 2023, it had an anime-themed trailer by Studio Pierrot, featuring Yui Ishikawa and Yuichiro Umehara, as well as music by Hiroyuki Sawano and Awich. It also got an animated trailer for Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty in February 2022. It was animated by WIT Studio and featured music by Ling Tosite Sigure.
Magic: The Gathering is a tabletop and digital collectible card game created by Richard Garfield, first released in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast.
